As the launch of Wii U is just over a month away, Nintendo has cut the the price of Wii console. Wii is now $130, with new bundles including copies of both Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. The Wii bundles are shipping now and it expects them to be widely available by October 28. Nintendo, though, plans to keep the Wii on store shelves for a while after the launch of the Wii U, much like Sony did with the original PlayStation after the launch of the PS2. The price cut offers a bargain option for consumers on a tight budget and helps build brand loyalty on their part, a loyalty Nintendo hopes to leverage into Wii U sales further down the road. It also leaves the door open for further cuts to keep the system selling in the future.

Authorities in Japan have arrested a suspected video games pirate in the first case of its kind, according to Nintendo.

An amendment to the Unfair Competition Prevention Act, introduced in December, made it a crime to sell devices that circumvent security controls.

The games company said the case involved the sale of kit designed to work with its DS handheld console.

It said it hoped the case would discourage other illegal vendors.

Nintendo says police in the central Aichi region made the arrest.

The case involves the sale of Majikon - adapters which accept memory cards containing software.

When plugged into a console's cartridge slot the machine activates a special interface which then allows the user to select which program to run off a SD memory card.
Pirate plug-in

Majikon manufacturers claim the equipment is designed to allow gamers to run home-made software.

However, they have been widely used to play pirated games downloaded from the internet and copied onto the SD cards.

Although Japan outlawed the devices years ago, those found selling them did not face criminal sanctions until the end of last year. As a result trade in the kit continued.

Japan is not the only country to target the equipment.

The UK's High Court banned the adapters in 2010. They were being sold in the UK as R4 cartridges.

Nintendo says there have been similar rulings in South Korea, Taiwan, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany.

Nintendo has responded to recent rumors claiming the Wii U is not as powerful as the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 in terms of graphics power.

Without directly confirming or denying the allegations, which came from two separate industry sources "familiar" with the Wii U's hardware, a Nintendo spokesperson encouraged gamers to look beyond graphics and, instead, focus on gameplay.

“We do not focus on technology specs," Nintendo told Yahoo's Digital Trends.

"We understand that people like to dissect graphics and processing power, but the experience of playing will always be more important than raw numbers.”

If we've learned anything from the Wii sales, it's that people do tend to flock towards innovative technology. The Wii's graphics were nothing special, but the idea of a new form of gaming intrigued many to go out and purchase the console. In my opinion, gameplay will always trump graphics - but it can't hurt to have both.

In the case of the Wii U, many were hoping this leap into the next generation would contain both, but on Monday a GamesIndustry International report caused some controversy when they claimed two developers said the Wii U's power couldn't keep up with that of the Xbox 360 and PS3.

"No, it's not up to the same level as the PS3 or the 360," said one of the developers who's been working with the Wii U. "The graphics are just not as powerful."

Another source added: "Yeah, that's true. It doesn't produce graphics as well as the PS3 or the 360. There aren't as many shaders, it's not as capable. Sure, some things are better, mostly as a result of it being a more modern design. But overall the Wii U just can't quite keep up."

It's amazing that Nintendo hasn't even announced the technical specifications of the Wii U and we are already having these debates as to which console is more powerful. While you'd think a "next-gen" console would be the clear winner in terms of power and graphics, Nintendo has stated from the beginning that the Wii U is all about the innovative gaming experience, particularly with the unique tablet controller.

Still, not all developers are in agreement with the Wii U being below the current generation of consoles. Last month, Vigil, developer of Wii U launch title Darksiders 2, said the Wii U was "on par" with the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Whatever the case, we should hear more about the Wii U specs in the coming months, most likely at E3 where Epic VP Mark Rein suggested Nintendo will "shock us" with their new console. They better if they intend on getting the consumers excited in time for its end of 2012 launch.

Here in sunny California the weather is warm with a cool breeze at the moment. You know what I personally relate that type of weather with? Juicy console gossip. So here we go!

According to a source close to Forget the Box, costs have surfaced regarding the Wii U's hardware, controller, and retail price. Manufacturing costs for the console and controller are estimated to be around $180. This includes the controller--which, including materials such as the camera and touchscreen, is said to cost the Big N no more than 50 clams to make--as well any materials for the Wii U itself.

According to this mysterious silhouette of a source, the Wii U controller's camera is running Nintendo $6, and its quality is slightly better than the 3DS and DSi's cameras. Additionally, the tablet's touchscreen supposedly has a $14 cost.

Last but certainly not least, we've got a retail price for the Wii U. And by "retail price", I mean "a number that this shadowy source just gave out at will." And the (rumored) price for the Wii U will be ... $300.

Like we've all said about a million times already, we'll have to wait and see what Nintendo says regarding the Wii U's price tag, hopefully come E3.

The new PokePark 2: Wonders Beyond will be released on February 27, 2012. It's largely unchanged since the first one. There are a few new attractions, but the same camera and control. That said, it's still a very hard game to hate.
Built by engineering students from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, this beast is over 12 feet long, roughly 30 times the length of the original NES controller on which it's based. It's housed in steel framing strong enough to withstand people literally jumping up and down on the 'A' and 'B' buttons. And since it weighs in at a linebacker-like 265 pounds, picking it up and setting it in your lap probably isn't a good idea.

Nintendo unveiled its upcoming console, the Nintendo Wii U at E3 2011 last summer. It will feature the original Wii’s exceptional motion controls but will be complimented by high definition audio and visuals. Wii U will also be backwards compatible with all original Wii games and software – allowing current Nintendo Wii owners a reason to upgrade when the console is released in April 2012 or early 2013. This means that the original Wii will not be retired completely for some time and titles will continue to be developed for the system even after the release of the Nintendo Wii-U.
